Here's
an example on this topic. It may not be 100% textbook, but
it demonstrates a few fundamental issues really well.
The
goalie is hugging the post while the opponent has the puck
on his glove side. As the forward makes the pass you see
the goalie starting his movement towards the expected shot.
Due
to the distance to be covered and quickness of the situation,
the goaltender's automatic reaction is to use the butterfly
slide.
The
leading right pad goes immediately to the ice and starts
putting coverage towards the expected shot.
As
you can also see, the goalie in this case did a small move
with the stick first, but quickly realized that he will
not be able to cut the pass.
The
right pad and stick leading the movement are almost creating
a problem as the shot comes a bit back towards the goalie
who gets his other pad in from the push movement just in
time to close the 5-hole. Also notice how well the goalie
follows his rebound.
