The
catch glove is a vital part of the modern goaltending game
and controlling the puck. This brief article and the 2 videos
are just examples of the proper usage.
Let's look at
the common mistakes:
-
Catch
glove is too far back and the goalie is not able to use
it in front of the body, pads etc and is, therefore, kicking
out unnecessary rebounds
-
Arms
are tight to the body like in the blocking butterfly position
at all times. Notice that this is the correct way to play
on close butterfly plays, but not when shots come a bit
further out
So, click on
the 2 movies linked on the right and see these examples
where Ari Sulander is using his catch glove to control the
shots in 2 different situations / drills.
Notice how the goalie
can control the puck on video # 2 even when the first shot
is right at his body. He was able to move the catch glove
there because it was in front of his body.
