This
video resource article demonstrates well how an effective
butterfly is on close plays and when a goaltender has to
"take the lower part of the net away" from the shooter.
You will also notice how effectively Velocity 7070 pads
turn into proper Pro-Fly position when they are strapped
on properly. If you have any questions on the strapping
check our Velocity
user guide article.
This
video will also give you a good example on the drill to
practice your butterfly execution. Start by skating out
to meet the shooter and start telescoping back towards your
net. The shooter will aim at your 5-hole when you are moving
backwards like you would do in a natural game situation.
Make sure that the shooter will give you enough time to
start your movement backwards before shooting. On each shot
you will perform your butterfly move. Pace yourself properly
so that you can do all movements at explosive game speed
(once your technique allows).
If
you have time and space to do the same drill with shooters
starting from the blue line and skating towards you at full
speed and performing the same shot on your 5-hole, it will
be even better and more game-like.
Remember also to practice
how to use your hands and keep them in front of your body
instead of tucking them at your side and behind as then
you can react better to shots and rebounds etc. Ask your
shooters to take some shots at your sides and over the pads
as well to force you to work on using your gloves for saves.
The toughest spot for most goalies is the space under your
blocker hand armpit, as with most normal sticks, they force
your arm up while your stick is covering your 5-hole and
this leaves an open spot.
We
will produce some additional resources later demonstrating
more advanced use of butterfly and butterfly slides.
