In
this series, we will cover the basics of angle plays for goaltenders
and try to give you the needed info to adjust your game and
practice habits so that you can improve your performance using
these methods.
This
first article is an introduction and explains what we mean
by angles and what will be covered in these 4 articles.
What is an angle?
It
simply means the goaltender's position relative to his/her
net and puck.
You
will learn how important it is for you to learn to position
yourself in proper distance and correct angle against the
shots.
Angle
is also a perception. We will teach you to understand what
this means and how the left and right shooters see the open
space while the real view is something totally different.
Below,
you can see the position of the puck when a goalie aligns
himself/herself like in the photo below.

Below,
the goalie is ready and the view you see is how a left shooter
would see the situation.

Below,
you see the real open space from the puck's angle. More photos
and full explanations will be in the next article, 2 of 4,
in this Angle series.

What is a correct
angle?
There
are 2 aspects we need to have right in order to say that we
are playing certain shots and situations using correct angles.
You need to be:
- Aligned centered
on the line between the goal and the puck
- Out of your
net at the proper distance to cut down the angle (Article
3 of 4 will cover this in detail)
Why do I need
to worry about my angles?
Very
simple question to answer. If you dont play your angles
right you will do either one or both of these:
- Leave too much
open net for the shooter to score on
- Leave too much
room on either side while over covering the other side and
thus making it hard or impossible for yourself to make the
save
